SC panel declines to endorse steel industry appeal for raising output cap on existing mines; says state govt should hasten lease approvals

The ore-starved steel industry in Karnataka is unlikely to see higher supply in the near future.

Sesa Goa, a division of Sesa Sterlite, is moving towards resuming iron ore mining in Karnataka. The company, which had stopped mining following a Supreme Court ban in the state two years ago (later lifted), recently secured a working permit for one year from the union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) for its mines in Chitradurga district.

Vests all mines with Mysore Minerals to conduct the auction

The Karnataka government has started the process to auction iron-ore mines under Category C by a Supreme Court direction. The combined capacity of all these mines is five million tonnes a year.
