At least four people have been killed in a landslide in a remote village in northern part of Dhading district last night. One person seriously injured in the incident has being taken to district headquarters Dhading Besi for medical treatment. The Tipling village, where landslides occurred due to incessant rain throughout last night, is in two-day walk from the district headquarters. The landside also swept off a house in the village. Police team has been dispatch to the incident site for rescue works

Accusing the government of not properly addressing their demands despite an agreement, the locals of Sisdole and surrounding areas again barred Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) from dumping garbage at the Okharpauwa Landfill Site Tuesday. Due to the obstruction from the locals, heaps of uncollected garbage has again started to pile up on the streets and pavements of the capital city, causing serious eye sore and stench to the residents of the city of over 2 million.

A leader of Indian opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked the Union government of India to persuade Nepal government to immediately release water in the Gandak river for irrigation in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. "The Nepal government has stopped the flow of water into the river and hence the canal is running dry affecting agriculture in UP and Bihar," BJP UP unit president Ramapati Ram Tripathi said, according to Indian media reports.

UK Minister for International Development for Asia Shahid Malik on Saturday announced that the UK government will extend an assistance of $55 million (Rs 3.74 billion) for the construction of rural roads over the next four years in various districts of Nepal. Malik, who was speaking at a program organized in Kavre district, informed that his government along with donors will provide an additional $550 million to upgrade almost 2,500 kilometers of rural roads. He hoped that this coupled with government funds of around $ 400 million will help in connecting all of rural Nepal.

Kathmandu Upathyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) plans to distribute 3.5 million liters of water to Kathmandu residents without treating it with chemicals to make it fit for drinking or purifying it. According to Annapurna Post, KUKL will supply 3.5 million liters of untreated water daily to residents of ward nos 16, 17, 18, 26, 27 and 28 to supplement the increasing water woes.

Kathmandu appears all set to reel under the perennial garbage problem for some time more as the Sisdole locals near the Okharpauwa Landfill Site in Nuwakot continue to obstruct garbage trucks of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) from dumping the city's wastage there. Due to the obstruction from last Friday, heaps of garbage has started to literally cover the pavements, causing serious eyesore to the city's residents and possible health hazards. Kathmanduites are already thronging to the hospital with diarrhea, jaundice, typhoid and other complaints.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) South Asia's Education for All (EFA) mid-term policy review conference kicked off in Kathmandu Monday. The four-day conference will review existing policies, identify policy gaps and devise policies and action plans to achieve the EFA goals. Speaking at the inaugural function, director of UNESCO Asia and Pacific region, Sheldon Shaeffer, said "We are happy for the progress in this region but not fully satisfied."

Seven one-horned rhinos of the ten that died inside Bardiya National Park (BNP) in the past 10 months were killed by poachers, raising serious concern over the very survival of these endangered species, reports Kantipur Daily. The remaining three rhinos had died due to natural causes, according to Fadindra Kharel, chief conservation officer of the BNP. Rampant poaching of rhinos inside the park is said to be the main cause behind the number of the endangered species going down so drastically.

One elderly man died on Saturday while more than 50 others have fallen sick due to a diarrhea outbreak in Fulbariya of Siraha district. One Nar Bahadur Magar, 60, of Chhaghare, Fulbariya-6 of the district died after being taken ill due to a serious bout of diarrhea, Kantipur Daily reported. Jiwach Saha, a local, told the daily that the whole village has been badly affected due to the epidemic that hit the village four days ago.

Authorities ask people to be alert about 'bird flu' The authorities have appealed to the general public to apply maximum caution to prevent the entry of 'bird flu,' which has been detected in bordering Indian region. Issuing a notice, Saturday, the Department for Livestock Service has said that recently the disease has been detected in Darjeeling and Kurseong region of India, which borders with eastern Nepal. It has urged the poultry traders, farmers, and general public not to bring in birds from across the border, which the government has already banned.
