LUCKNOW: The groundwater level is going down alarmingly in western UP districts. Meerut has seen maximum depletion where the water table is going down by an average of 91cm annually.
The state government has extensive plans for Gomti's channelization and riverfront development but the environment experts are more concerned about constantly shrinking river-flow.

Gomti has gone dry in its upper catchment. The river has lost its tributaries in all the districts through which it flows, except in Sitapur where Sarayan and Gon supplement it.
