The report discusses the climate condition over Indian region during the year 2023. Notably, global temperatures soared to exceptionally high levels during this period (WMO.No.1347). The India Meteorological Department continuously monitors weather and climate over Indian region.

The annual mean land surface air temperature averaged over India during 2022 was +0.51°C above the long-term average (1981-2010 period). The year 2022 was the fifth warmest year on record since nationwide records commenced in 1901.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has carried out an analysis of observed monsoon rainfall variability and changes of 29 States & Union Territory at State and District levels based on the IMD’s observational data of recent 30 years (1989-2018) during the Southwest monsoon season from June to September (JJAS). Five states viz., Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Meghalaya and Nagaland have shown significant decreasing trends in southwest monsoon rainfall during the recent 30 years period (1989-2018).

The year 2018 was the sixth warmest year on record in India since it commenced keeping nation-wide records of weather events in 1901, said India Meteorological Department (IMD)while noting that the country had lost over 1,400 lives in extreme weather events last year.

According to latest observations, the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘ HUDHUD ’ over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved west - northwestwards during past six hours and lay centered at 1 4 30 hrs IST of 11 th October 20 14 near latitude 16.1 ºN and longitude 85. 0 ºE , about 250 km southeast of isakhapatnam and 340 km south - southeast of Gopalpur. The system would move northwestwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh coast around Visakhapatnam by the forenoon of 12 th October 2014.
