The Supreme Court judgement ordering suspension of all mining activities in the 448 sq. km. area of the Aravalli Hill range falling in Haryana's districts of Faridabad and Gurgaon including Mewat.
Apex court lets state government decide THE Supreme Court on March 19 asked the Haryana government to ban mining activites in the Aravalis if it felt the eco-system of the mountain range is getting destroyed. Amicus curiae (friend of the court) Ranjit Kumar, along with many lawyers though pressed for a total ban on mining. Hearing in the case was on when the magazine went to press.
During the Supreme Court (SC) hearing on 18th of March, the court appointed Central Empowered Committee brought in notice of the apex court the condition of Badkhal lake. When counsel A D N Rao showed the satellite images of the lake to the justice Bench, then they were worried and commented that the lake bed is now suitable only for playing cricket.
New Delhi: Supreme Court may have banned all mining within 5 Km of Delhi but countless fresh cuts in the Aravalis around Pali and Anangpur stand witness to how the coveted blue stone that go into making plush houses in the city still come from these ravaged mountains.

Gurgaon: Though the next hearing on the issue of mining in Aravallis is scheduled in the Supreme Court for today, the Forest department has not yet filed a reply to the three pending interlocutory applications (IA).
SAVE THE Aravallis: a slogan that like so many others stirs little response until the cost of ignoring it hits home: no electricity, no water, no construction material and, worst of all, no rain and the daytime temperature perpetually above 50 degrees Celsius.
