After a year-long delay, the State Forest Department has finally embarked on the promotion of bamboo plantation under National Bamboo Mission.
As to start, the department has already begun raising nursery in the areas owned by it across the State.

KOHIMA, Dec 10: With the use of bamboo gaining prominence in the State, it appears the Nagaland Government is looking for more and better ways to exploit one of its richest resources.

This paper deals with a new species viz. Bambusa mokokchungeana from Nagaland and with nomenclature of the bamboos from North East India and Andaman Island.

Year 2010 will be celebrated as Bamboo Year by the Forest Department. The primary target has been set to plant about 3-crore bamboo plants in forest and other areas. Bamboo plantation will also be included in schemes as forestation and gardening, said Forest Minister Sartaj Singh.

Mumbai: The implementation of the Scheduled Tribes and other forest dwellers (recognition of forest rights) Act, 2006, has been delayed in Maharastra, as the state has cleared only 4,500 cases in a year.

"The state has received 2.77 lakh claims under the Act and 4,500 have received final approval since February 2008," principal secretary for tribal department PS Meena told PTI.

Jamshedpur, Oct. 20: The industries department will work with the forest department to utilise bamboo resources to the hilt, in a bid to save the weavers in Manusmudia village in East Singhbhum district from penury.

Various fish traps made of bamboo and other natural construction materials using indigenous knowledge systems are traditionally employed to catch small economic fishes in low lying areas of West Bengal and Assam.

KARUR: Farmers must consider means of value addition for their produce to make agriculture a more viable venture. Bamboo cultivation is one such endeavour that could be gainfully carried on by the farming community in suitable places, according to District Collector J. Uma Maheswari.

The focus of the World Bamboo Congress, starting today in Thailand, will be to promote and develop Brahmaputra-Mekong Valley axis for sustainable bamboo development, reports PTI.

TURA: The vast resources of raw bamboos found abundantly in the Garo Hills region is expected to transform the economy of the region, particularly the farmers, once it is converted into finished products.

The North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project (NERCORP) in collaboration with the North Eastern Council (NEC) has expressed keenness to tap this resource for better use.
