The -State forest department has launched a unique policy aiming at income generation of the unemployed people as well as the youth of the state by using various species of local bamboo available in the region.

Refuting all allegations that land in a reserved forest in Mon district has been grabbed, the Nagaland Government clarified that the land would be used for bamboo plantation under Nagaland Bamboo Mission by involving poor farmers.

Cane and bamboo industry in the North East is expected to get further impetus with a Cane and Bamboo Technology Park (CBTP) that is coming up at Byrnihat under the aegis of the North Eastern Council (NEC).

Bamboo with its multifarious utility plays an important role in food and nutritional security of the tribal population in North-East India besides industrial value. Most of the tree improvement in bamboo is based on phenotypic selection followed by clonal multiplication. Since bamboo flowers rarely sexual propagation based improvement has limited success resulting in less variation.

Tirupur: To augment income-generation activities in rural areas, the Department of Horticulture plans to introduce bamboo cultivation in Tirupur block during the current financial year under the Centre-sponsored National Bamboo Mission.

Flowering of bamboo is a botanical enigma. The factors responsible for this are still not clearly established. Bamboos flower only once and die after flowering to regenerate from seeds1. The strange phenomenon of simultaneous flowering in bamboo clumps in vast areas is called gregarious flowering and causes ecological havoc. (Correspondence)

Northeast India, being situated in the transition zone of Indian, Indo-Malayan and Indo-Chinese biogeographic regions, harbour a rich biological diversity, which is a well known fact.
