Borders of Sri Lanka's World Heritage Site, Sinharaja rainforest reserve have been expanded to add over 2000 hectares of land to the forest, the Land and Land Development Ministry said today.

BARIPADA: Already shocked over frequent elephant killings in Similipal and Kuldiha reserve forests, the forest authorities here are in for some more trouble.

The Sundarbans forests in its entirety in India and Bangladesh is about 10,000 sq km, of which 40% lies in southeast West Bengal in India. This mangrove forest is divided into the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve and 24 Parganas (South) Forest Division, and is the only mangrove forest in the world where tigers are found.

Shillong: The threat looming over the state’s rich natural resources, documented and non-documented, being wiped out from the face of the earth can be attributed to urbanization and other forms of development thereby paving the way for the depletion of biodiversity in the state, says the Head of Botanical Survey of India (Shillong and Gangtok) Dr TM Hynniewta.

“North East is considered as an ecological hotspot but a large section of the people in the region are not aware that the region’s reservoirs of biodiversity are under constant threat”, Dr Hynniewta opined.

Second new bird to be found in Indian territory this year

A group of scientists from the Zoological Survey of India have discovered a new species of bird. The bird, called Rallina, otherwise known as the ‘Great Nicobar Crake’, is found in the Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve. Scientists said that the bird was unknown before. It was found while cataloguing local fauna and animal-life in the reserve, under the man and biosphere programme of Unesco, sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Forests.
