In a welcome drive to mobilise public opinion and conserve the famed Corbett Tiger Reserve, a group of citizens in Ramnagar cleared over five quintals of polythene garbage from the park periphery on March 7 and 9. The cleanliness campaign was a joint initiative of local NGO, the Society for Mahseer Conservancy and officials of the Corbett Tiger Reserve.

A short study was undertaken from December 2004 to April 2005, to assess the species diversity and composition of freshwater fishes in three tributaries of Ramganga river in the foothills of Western Himalaya. One tributary was within a protected area (PA; Corbett National Park); the other two were outside the PA (Lansdowne Forest Division).

The Corbett National Park platinum jubilee celebrations will begin with a workshop on strategies for preservation of the tigers of Corbett and landscape for the coming 25 years.

A70-member team of Uttarakhand forest guards has counted as many as 34 tiger cubs along with 17 to 18 tigresses in the Corbett Tiger Reserve during four days of monitoring carried out a couple of days ago. Senior members of the team said the numbers indicated possibility of a rise in tiger population in Corbett in years to come, provided all the cubs survive.

The results of the much-awaited scientific census of tigers, currently underway, will be made public on March 26.
