There seems to be no end to their quest for clean, drinking water, but residents of the resettlement colony in Bhalaswa are not ready to give up yet. On Thursday, after a joint inspection to identify the locations for provision of water tankers failed to reach an agreeable decision, the residents decided to continue their struggle for potable water.

Residents of the resettlement colony have been complaining against unavailability of safe drinking water in their area. The Delhi Jal Board which supplies water to the city through a piped network sends tankers to Bhalaswa to meet the demand for water.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed serious concern over the worsening quality of water in the Yamuna due to high level of pollution though over Rs 1,800 crores had been spent to contain pollution. A Bench of Justices Swatanter Kumar and Madan B. Lokur, hearing a petition relating to Yamuna water said, “It is unfortunate that huge amount of public funds are spent without showing any improvement in water quality.”

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the Delhi Jal Board to take all requisite measures to ensure contamination-free water supply to the residents of South Extension Part-I in South Delhi.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Vipin Sanghi passed the direction while a hearing a petition by the Residents’ Welfare Association South Extension Part-I alleging that the residents were getting mud contaminated water.

Instead of hinging on a pilot project for metering Jodhpur ward, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is of the opinion that metered water connection should be extended to the entire city at a single go. It will take the project five years to be implemented in the entire city in phases. The hurry being that unless the city plans for a metered supply, the AMC will not be eligible for the second phase of the JNNURM funds.
