Bicholim (Goa): As the famous sun-soaked Calangute beach gets decked up for yet another Christmas and New year parties, villagers of Shirgao situated a few kilometres away try to find new ways to escape the halo of toxic red dust that enter their drawing rooms every day.

NEW DELHI: The 10,000 MW nuclear power plant that the NPCIL proposes to set up at Jaitapur, Maharashtra, with reactors from French company Areva, was on the agenda of the Union Environment Ministry's Expert Appraisal Committee meeting on Monday.

According to some members, the committee plans to recommend a conditional environmental clearance for the plant.

THE environment ministry will have an integrated approach while dealing with clearance to projects dependent on coal, such as thermal power, steel and sponge iron manufacturing.

These projects will need to secure environmental and forest clearances for the linked coal block or mine before applying for clearances for the project.

THE Posco review panel on Monday submitted a "split verdict" on the South Korean steel maker's Orissa project. Although the dominant view was for revoking of environmental and coastal regulation zone clearances, government sources said that a reworking of the proposal could clear the way for the project.
