The officials of the Department of Agriculture have estimated that 10,000 farmers in the area were affected due to the recent floods in the Ampara district.
Incessant rain claimed five lives and caused an extensive damage to standing crops, mostly paddy, over thousands of hectares in the southern districts on Sunday.
At least eight people were killed and nearly 200,000 people have been affected due to torrential rain resulting from the north-east monsoon in the country.
At the time of destructive floods, the distress of affected people attracts attention but, unfortunately, as soon as the flood waters recede they are forgotten.
Disaster Management Centre of Sri Lanka said that over 7,000 families have been displaced due to floods. Also, several areas are in danger with landslides, the Centre added.
