As fugitive emissions in the dry form and as leakage of ash slurry from ash ponds, coal ash is a major environmental and health concern today. It has been under the regulatory scanner for more than two decades.

A report was sought from District Magistrate, Muzaffarpur and Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) on the allegation of pollution being caused by fly ash dump set up by thermal power plant at village Kanti Nagar, district Muzaffarpur, Bihar causing damage to the public health, animal health and ecology in the area.

The matter related to closure of Platinum AAD Blocks by the Pollution Control Committee for Dadar, Nagar and Haveli on the ground that its activities were of a "Red Category".

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Subhash Kushwaha, President, Machhali Palan Sahkari Samiti Maryadit Banouli Vs State of Madhya Pradesh dated 05/08/2020 against unscientific disposal of fly ash by M/s Gorbi Project in the coal mines of the NTPC, Vindhya Nagar, District Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, affecting the fishing society of the inhabitants.

Between 2020 and June 2020, several ash pond accidents have been reported across India. These accidents have caused deaths, extensive pollution of the water, air, soil and loss of property. Unfortunately, the public outrage associated with coal ash pollution remains limited to big disasters.
