The Orang National Park in northern Assam, believed to have about two dozen tigers, is under threat from encroachers. The encroachers have been particularly targeting the south-eastern portion of the park with the authorities resorting to lathicharge and lobbing of teargas shells to drive them away.

The environmental NGO in the state has requested Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) to cease the encroachment in the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary.

New villages springing along border

JORHAT, May 12: The alarming growth of human population along the border areas of Kaziranga National Park has taken a serious turn during the last few years. The growth has been alarming during the last decade, sources said.

A recent survey has found that the famous Kaziranga National Park in Assam has the highest tiger density in the world, but conservationists have warned that it could be an indicator of habitat destruction and suggested remedial measures.

Vedanta-controlled Bharat Aluminium Company (Balco) will get legal possession of 600 acres of land that it had allegedly encroached upon in Korba district of Chhattisgarh.

Bowing to intense pressure from the Centre, the Karnataka government seems to have finally woken up to the menace of illegal mining as its officials recently raided and seized huge amounts of unaccounted iron ore from the Bellikere and Karwar ports.

The government will demarcate 25,000 acres of land in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park
in the next three months. This would help prevent further encroachment and identify the dwellers staying on forest or private land, the government said.
