Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today said 20 squads are on the job to check illegal mining of iron ore and exports and rejected Opposition criticism that there is no let-up in the unlawful activity.

"13 joint squads have been activated. They are keeping a 24-hour vigil and discharging their duties," he told reporters here after a review meeting on the issue.

Small farmers need credit and other supporting services for diverse activities which comprise a family’s livelihood strategy. Self Help Affinity Groups (SAGs) are the most appropriate institutions which provide the necessary space, resources and skills required by a poor family to develop a livelihood strategy.

Sheep penning is a time-tested practice in dry land farming, with flocks of sheep being herded in farms to enrich soil with the sheep droppings and urine.

The State Government has given instructions to Zilla Panchayat officers to make better use of NREGS funds for rebuilding works in the flood-hit areas. So far, the State has spent Rs 770 crore out of Rs 2,300 crore, the target set for the State in the year 2009-10.

The State government would take up Jala Nirmala scheme at the cost of Rs 1,100 crore in eleven districts of north Karnataka including Bagalkot, Bidar, Belgaum, Bijapur, Dharwad, Gadag, Gulbarga, Haveri, Koppal, Raichur and Uttara Kannada.

Mangalore, Sept.22 There is a need to think of sustainable projects such as rainwater harvesting to tackle the water problem in drought-affected regions rather than implementing projects such as river diversion, according to Mr Shree Padre, an expert in rainwater harvesting.

The State government has decided to include Chikkaballapur, Bangalore rural, Gadag and Haveri districts under the National Horticulture Mission. With this, all districts of the State have been covered under the Mission.

With many parts of the State facing drought, the agriculture production, including food crops, will be badly hit in the current year in the State.
