13 tanks declared abandoned are puddles of stagnant water where garbage is dumped daily

The Kerala State Planning Board will submit a Rs.1,222 crore Bharathapuzha Basin Development Plan soon to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for getting financial aid from it for the project.

The Planning Board member C.P. John told The Hindu on Saturday that the Planning Board held discussions with the WWF delegation two months back on the issue and they were positive about assisting the project.

Line departments directed to repair water storing infrastructure before monsoon

Vellore Collector P. Sankar has directed the officials of the line departments such as Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, Public Works Department (PWD), Rural Development Department and the Revenue Department to carry out repairs to the water bodies well before the onset of the north-east monsoon to improve holding capacity of the tanks and ponds and facilitate recharge of groundwater.

The district administration has coordinated the efforts of various government departments to ensure regular supply of protected drinking water both in the urban and rural limits during the summer months.

Chennai Metrowater has started a survey across the city to measure the effectiveness of rainwater harvesting structures. Efforts are also on to sensitise people towards the need to harness rainwater.

As part of this campaign, the water agency has been conducting checks in various parts of the city, including added areas, since July 1. A team of officials inspected buildings to see if rainwater harvesting structures are functional.
