The Digamber Kamat-led Goa Government will have to consesually get their way out with the SEZ promoters in the State. The Union Commerce Ministry has said that they cannot offer much help for the State Government to denotify three notified SEZs in the State. The letter came as a blow to the State Government which is currently reeling under severe political pressure to save its existence. State chief secretary JP Singh said that the Government has received such a letter and we will take the stand within a couple of days after thorough discussion on the issue.

Panaji: The Centre has conveyed to Goa government that there is no provision to denotify approved and notified Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

The high court has imposed a ban on felling of trees in all forest areas, including private forestlands, except in accordance with the order passed by the Apex Court. The court further directed that felling in all forests would remain suspended, except in accordance with the working plans of the state government approved by the Central Government.

The Van Gujjars are a Muslim pastoral community.

A Bench headed by Justice T S Thakur, however, directed the Centre and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(DMRC) to make all possible efforts to reduce the level of noise pollution which will be caused by the Metro rail running on the elevated corridor.

Looks like the State Government needs High Court to remind it that one of its duties is to ensure that the people in Goa get adequate unpolluted drinking water. And, the right to get unpolluted drinking water falls within the ambit of right to life.

THE GOVERNMENT has finally lent an ear to the victims of Bhopal gas tragedy. But coming after 25 years it's certainly a case of too little too late. The government has accepted "in principle' their demand to set up a commission to carry out medical, economic, social and environmental rehabilitation of the victims. However, dissatisfaction persists as demands of legal action against Union Carbide and Dow Chemicals are yet to be met.

A public interest litigation was filed in the High Court recently against the state government, seeking directions to the Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) to rectify its faulty norms in according permission for setting up industries without studying the impact on bio-diversity and greenery. The PIL disputed the norms of the APPCB for setting up an industrial unit.
