Forest Dept to join hands with Bihar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala and Bihar Forest Departments have decided to join hands to prevent the inter-state smuggling of elephants. During the last many years, the elephant mafia in the State had been sourcing their elephants from the Sonepur Animal Fair held in Bihar during the first week of November.

Status and distribution of the endangered Gangetic dolphin (Platanista gangetica gangetica) in the Brahmaputra River

A population assessment survey of the endangered Ganges river dolphin was made between February and Apil 2005 in the Brahmaputra River starting from Assam-Arunachal border to the India-Bangladesh border. One hundred and ninety seven dolphins were recorded in the entire 856 km river stretch with an encounter rate of 0.23 dolphins per km.

African elephants: surviving by the skin of their teeth

The African elephant's misfortune has been its teeth, in particular the well developed pair of upper incisors known as tusks for which it is being killed in large numbers. The visible ivory part of the tusks is made up of dentine with an outer layer of enamel, and when viewed in cross section it reveals criss-cross lines that form a series of diamond shapes. This is what gives the elephant ivory its distinctive lustre, and makes it so valuable economically.

Sand mafia strikes again

KOCHI: The Sand mafia has resurfaced in the Cheranelloor area with more force, to launch an offensive against those people who stand against their illegal mining activities. The residents of Cheranelloor and Kothad panchayats said that the police were acting in connivance with the sand mafia.
