The Justice M B Shah Commission of enquiry which is on a visit to Odisha will probe all mining leases allocated in the state since 1952.

“We are going to probe all mining leases granted in the state since 1952. The panel will examine whether these leases are operational or closed,” said U V Singh, head of the probe panel. The panel in its second day of scrutiny into alleged irregularities in the mining activities had invited some private mine owners from Keonjhar district.

At least five private companies under scanner

The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a preliminary enquiry to probe alleged irregularities in issuance of licences to at least five private companies for exploration of mineral wealth in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea during 2010-11. The prime allegation is that licences for 28 of the 62 offshore mines were granted to companies owned by the son and brother of an Indian Revenue Officer in conspiracy with unknown officials of the Indian Bureau of Mines and the Union Ministry of Mines.

New Delhi After filing a series of cases in the coal block allocation scam, the CBI has now been tasked with unearthing alleged irregularities in the allocation of offshore mining licenses to private firms.

The CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry into allocation of 62 off-shore mineral blocks in the sea bed of of Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, the first-ever attempt to explore untapped mineral wealth worth thousands of crore.

PANJIM: Tightening the screws on the state government for its seemingly belligerent attitude on mining dumps, the Ministry of Environments and Forests (MoEF) has issued show cause notices to 46 companies for mining from low grade iron ore /reject dumps in the State.

The 46 mining companies have been issued show cause notices for allegedly violating provisions of the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) notification 2006. The notices dated September 9, 2012 and issued under section 5 of Environment Protection Act (EPA) 1986, have to be replied to within 15 days stating why environmental clearances (ECs) granted to them should not be revoked, and direction for their closure not be issued under the Environment Protection Act
