The coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, including state capital Chennai, received incessant rainfall due to Cyclone Laila. The torrent, which began late on Tuesday, continued on Wednesday too. The regional meteorological department in Chennai issued a warning that similar weather conditions would continue till Thursday.

HEAVY rains with strong gales lashed coastal Andhra region on Wednesday as authorities began forceful evacuation from low-lying areas with the cyclonic storm set for landfall on Thursday morning.

The storm, christened Laila, lay centred at 320 km south-southwest of Machilipatnam and is set to cross the Andhra coast between Kakinada (East Godavari) and Nellore.

The Andhra Pradesh coast may escape severe battering by cyclonic storm Laila that is showing signs of weakening before hitting the seashore. However, heavy rains with gales, which killed 10 people, brought normal life to a halt in the coastal region.
