MADURAI: Any lethargy by the State Government on the Mullaperiyar dam row with neighbouring Kerala would certainly ruin the economy in southern districts of Tamil Nadu and also lead to water crisis in Madurai in the near future, said Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko here on Tuesday.

The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was established in 1990, under the Inter-State Water Disputes Act, at a specific direction of the Supreme Court. Ironically, and despite a constitutional and statutory bar on jurisdiction, the court has made it very difficult for the Tribunal to function in accordance with the Act.

New Delhi: Contending that the Mullaperiyar water dispute is an inter-State water dispute that cannot be resolved by the Supreme Court, Kerala on Thursday suggested that the Centre could be asked to constitute a tribunal to adjudicate the issue as it has wider ramifications.

"IF five of us decide that it is a water dispute, everything goes," Justice D K Jain said while hearing the daylong arguments on Thursday on Mullaiperiyar dam.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the State of Kerala replied that even his legislation (the Act of 2006 on Mullaiperiyar) goes.
