The long-standing water dispute between the States of Tamil Nadu and Kerala on raising the height of the century-old Mullaperiyar dam got prolonged on Tuesday after the Supreme Court referred the matter to a Constitution Bench.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan Wednesday asked Tamil Nadu to agree to its demand for a new dam at Mullaperiyar as the present one had outlived its life.

Achuthanandan said that a recent study conducted by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Roorkee had found that the dam would collapse if an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale occurred.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu can raise the storage level of the Mullaperiyar reservoir to 142 feet and there is no need to take permission from Kerala, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said here on Wednesday.

THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: A structural stability analysis of the Mullaperiyar dam conducted by the Department of Earthquake Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkie, has concluded that the main Mullaperiyar dam and the baby dam are likely to face damage in the event of an earthquake. Such damage may lead to failure of the dam.
