ANNOUNCEMENT of fresh leakages due to rising water level in Mullai- periyar dam by some Kerala officials has cleared the ground for Tamil Nadu to conduct maintenance work on the dam.
The water levels in the Mullaiperiyar dam reached 133 ft on Thursday.
The long-standing water dispute between the States of Tamil Nadu and Kerala on raising the height of the century-old Mullaperiyar dam got prolonged on Tuesday after the Supreme Court referred the matter to a Constitution Bench.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan Wednesday asked Tamil Nadu to agree to its demand for a new dam at Mullaperiyar as the present one had outlived its life.
Achuthanandan said that a recent study conducted by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Roorkee had found that the dam would collapse if an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale occurred.
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu can raise the storage level of the Mullaperiyar reservoir to 142 feet and there is no need to take permission from Kerala, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy said here on Wednesday.
