HOWRAGHAT, July 6: With the rest of the State the week-long Vanamohutsava organized by the Karbi Anglong Environment and Forest department is under way here. On the occasion, a function was held at Phulani where local MAC and EM for Environment and Forest Department, KAAC, Hemari Teron, local MLA and Asom parliamentary secretary, Bidyasing Engleng, KAAC EM for PHE, Art and Culture and Revenue department Sum Ronghang along with the all senior officials of the five Forest divisions took part.

"Assam, till June this year, has recorded only 64 deaths caused by malaria, which is the lowest in the last one decade. Of the 64 deaths, 34 have been reported from Karbi Anglong. Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed this before mediapersons today, asserting that the State would soon manage to bring the figure further down. While the total number of malaria deaths in 2006 was 304, in 2007 the same dropped to 152, Sarma said adding that the Kamrup district registered just one death till this point of time.

The Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council donated a sum of Rs. 50 lakh to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund on Saturday to assist flood-affected people of the State, an official release said. Calling on Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at his office chamber in Dispur, a delegation led by the Chief Executive Member of KAADC Mangal Singh Ingti handed over a cheque of the said amount. Veterinary Minister Kharsingh Ingti and MP Biren Singh Ingty were also present on the occasion. The Chief Minister lauded the gesture of the KAADC delegation

Though malaria is yet to strike all parts of Assam in epidemic form, 27 deaths due to the disease have been reported from different parts of the State till date with the hill district of Karbi Anglong being the worst affected with 18 deaths. Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that apart from some parts of Karbi Anglong, there has been no rush of malaria patients in any of the hospitals and health centres of the State. He said that last year, as many as 141 persons died due to the disease and 60 deaths were reported by the end of May.
