Basavanakatte lake in Kengeri hobli, once a vital water body in the area, has now been reduced to a dumpyard of plastic waste. Lack of conservation efforts by the authorities has left the lake to die a slow death.

Heaps of burnt and unburnt plastic wastes are dumped here illegally, polluting the water body and its surroundings. But the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike authorities and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board seem to be oblivious.

The district pollution control board has issued a fiat in respect of using idols for the vinayaka chathurthi festival here.

The PCB has forbidden public from using dyed or painted idols and they are requested to use only clay idols. Idols must not be immersed in beach or lakes and it must be done 500 meters into the sea. The PCB has identified following sites for immersion.

Ashtamudi Lake was declared a wetland of global import 10 years ago

On August 19, 2012, it will be 10 years since the brackish water Ashtamudi Lake with eight creeks was declared a Ramsar site by designating it as a wetland of international importance. The lake was recommended by the Ramsar Convention’s partner organisations as a wetland of 61.4 sq km. And the lake entered the Ramsar list as site number 1,204.

Heightened activity was witnessed near the Ooty Lake on Thursday following an inspection of the lake and its surroundings carried out on Tuesday by the Principal Secretary, Environment and Forest, C.V. Shankar.

The inspection carried out by district and civic officials followed a study which indicated that the Ooty Lake is one of the dirtiest lakes in the State. Since the effluents from commercial buildings and houses flowing through the Kodappamund channel which cut through the town were found to be a major contributory factor for the lake being in its present polluted condition, municipal workers were entrusted with the task of diverting them.

Water Resources Department attempts to rejuvenate contaminated waterbody under National Lake Conservation Plan

To infuse life into polluted lakes around the city, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has recently submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Environment and Forests to restore these water bodies under the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP). The NLCP’s objective is to rejuvenate urban and semi-urban lakes that have been polluted by the release of sewage into them.

Garbage disposal poses health risks to residents of Tippenahalli

Residents of Tippenahalli near Lakshmipura lake wake up to stench and smoke every morning. The area, located a few kilometres from the Peenya Industrial Area, has been turned into a dump yard by industries, hospitals, research organisations, hotels and marriage halls. The NICE Ring Road between Magadi Road Junction and Jindal, cuts across the place. The lake is one side of the road and Tippenahalli lies on the other side.

State Pollution Control Board says water unsuitable for potable purposes

The lake in Udhagamandalam, popularly known as Ooty, is, according to a study by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), one of the most polluted water bodies in the State. Its water quality, the study says, is unsuitable for potable purposes. A major tourist attraction in the popular hill station, the lake now emits a foul odour, thanks to untreated sewage being let out into it.
