NEW DELHI: The government has sanctioned Rs 4065.81 crore for pollution abatement schemes for rivers and lakes in various states with Uttar Pradesh getting the biggest share at Rs 1385.95 crore.

For most tourists, a visit to the hill station at Munnar is not complete without a boat safari on the scenic Mattupetty reservoir. But very few of them are aware of the impact of boating on the environment and wildlife.

The Kerala State Biodiversity Board and the Forest department have raised the alarm about the pollution caused by motorised boats plying the reservoir and the litter left behind by tourists.

The Bangalore-headquartered Toyota Kirloskar Motor Private Limited has stated that it does not let out water from its plant premises on the Bangalore City outskirts and wondered how the company was being made a party to “the pollution of the Byramangala Lake and the rivers flowing into it.”

The company was responding to a news report in Deccan Herald’s January 6, 2013, edition, captioned “Industry, KSPCB pulled up over pollution of rivers.” The report in question was based on the proceedings of a Lok Adalat sitting on January 22, 2013.

Relief for Pallavaram Municipality

The Pallavaram Muncipality got some relief from the National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, on Thursday on the issue of dumping garbage. The Tribunal directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to make a spot inspection on the new site at Venkatamangalam mooted by the municipality and to accord ‘consent to establish’ without further delay.

Built to prevent flooding, channel is now a garbage dump

Work on tackling a chronic problem relating to the pollution of the Ooty Lake, which has been defying a solution for long, started on Saturday with workers of the Public Works Department — Water Resources Organisation (PWD-WRO) getting into the Kodappamund channel. The channel, extending over about 2.9 kilometres, from Kodappamund at one end of the town to the Ooty Lake at the other end, has been identified as the main reason for the lake getting polluted.

Environmentalists here are waging a grim battle to keep the picturesque Mookaneri Lake alive. The Public Works Department’s (PWD) 39-acre water spread, resurrected in 2010 by Salem Citizens Forum at a cost of Rs. 87 lakh under the public initiative, is now a sweet home to birds and flora of all hues.
The lake has turned into a tourists’ paradise today with forum members planning to carry out further development projects such as park and other basic amenities.

Is urban India drowning in its own excreta? Nearly 80 per cent of the sewage generated in India flows untreated into its rivers, lakes and ponds, turning the water sources too polluted to use.

Hyderabad: APPCB Task Force, on Friday reportedly directed immediate closure of about 25 polluting units operating within 10km radius of Osmansagar (Gandipet) and Himayats-agar lakes, the main source of drinking water to the city for not shifting despite repeated notices.

APPCB Task Force reportedly decided to cut off the power of these polluting industries as per the provisions. Leading vaccination companies including the government-owned Indian Immunologicals Limited and others having a foreign partnership in addition to some other government undertakings are amongf:\page3 a total of 55 shortlisted units which are in the process of shifting, have been given some grace period, sources say.

Slums account for a quarter of the urban population, but get only one twentieth of the total water supply, said Vice-President Hamid Ansari on Monday, referring to the sharp inequity in water supply in the country.

Expressing concern over the quality of water and the declining water table, he said: “Even the lucky one’s who are connected to the regular water supply system, get water of dubious quality, in an erratic manner. The solution being pursued is to bore wells, which is in turn is leading to an alarming decline in the water table, engendering a possible national groundwater crisis.”
