A team of officials from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board and other government departments, including the Chennai Corporation made an inspection of the sprawling Velachery Lake, among the last surviving water bodies in the city on Sunday morning in an attempt to protect and preserve the water body.
A public interest litigation petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench here seeking a direction to the Kodaikanal Municipality Commissioner to preserve the 64 acre lake in the hill station from being polluted by drainage water let out by private bungalows as well as government offices located around it.
The petitioner, S.A. Mahendra Babu of Tamil Nadu Environmental Council, a non-governmental organisation, alleged that private water lorries were drawing the polluted water from the lake and supplying it to residential houses as well as Mother Teresa Women's University.
Several thousand fishes died in a sprawling lake in Poosivakkam village near Wallajahbad in Kancheepuram district. While residents noticed a few dead fishes floating on the surface of the water earlier this week, many more were found along the banks since Thursday evening.
According to sources in Wallajahbad Panchayat Union, the death was due to contamination of the lake by effluents from several dyeing units in villages around the lake.

Contractors stay away from projects citing lack of profit
