Majority of Himalayan glaciers analysed are melting or retreating at varying rates in different regions, the government has said. It has noted that melting glaciers due to any impact of climate change will not only severely affect the flow in Himalayan river system but will also give rise to natural disasters.

Grievance in the application is against proposed Sambhar festival between 17 – 19 February, 2023 at Sambhar Lake near Jaipur. This will involve activities like kite flying, paragliding, motorcycle expedition. According to the applicant such activities will adversely affect migratory birds and natural habitat of the lake which is a Ramsar site, particularly on account of use of loudspeakers.

The monitoring of water quality is being done on a quarterly basis by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC). The Inter-Ministerial Expert Group formed by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has prepared a draft report for conservation and rejuvenation of the Najafgarh jheel.

Encroachment within buffer zones of lakes and tanks have been removed in Hyderabad and neighbouring areas. However, due to pending litigations and cases filed by the landlords, some of the encroachments could not be removed. Thereby the lake protection works are stalled in that area. For lake boundary protection works, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has sanctioned funds for Rs. 94.17 crores for erection of chain link fencing around 63 lakes.
