KALAHANDI has always captured the national imagination, but never for the right reasons. Recurring poverty deaths and reports about entire communities surviving on mango kernels defined this predominantly tribal district in southern Orissa for decades.

The Supreme Court today asked the Union ministry of environment and forests to consider within two weeks the conditions proposed for resumption of limestone mining by Lafarge, the French cement company, in Meghalaya for its factory in Bangladesh.

New Delhi: The high-powered team, headed by B N Jha, RCCP North Eastern Regional Office of Environment and Forest, that included several other senior officials, has confirmed that Lafarge has been following high standards of environmental compliance.

Shillong: The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has now set its sights on uranium occurring in and around the Balpakram National Park.

A proposal to de-notify an area of 8 sq.km for exploratory mining in the Roncheng Plateau in the environs of Balpakram is already lying with the relevant departments of the Central Government.

Ranchi, March 31: The ambitious task of determining the exact quantity of mineral deposits in the state has been taken up by public sector undertaking National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC).

The corporation is executing the task free of cost as part of a joint venture with the government of Jharkhand.

New Delhi: Making it clear that the French company Lafarge should comply with Indian laws and get a fresh Environment Impact Assessment done for its limestone mines in Meghalaya forests, the Supreme Court on Monday refused to vacate its stay on mining operations.

SHILLONG, March 29: After consistent plea before the Supreme Court on extraction of limestone from Shella-Nongtrai areas of Meghalya, the apex court today said that the project cannot be allowed to continue without a valid environmental clearance and that Lafarge should conduct EIA study afresh. The Court accepted plea of the Shella Action Committee.
