The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Meghalaya Government on a report by the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) that illegal mining of limestone was going on in the East Khasi hill region in the State.

A special three-judge forest bench, headed by the Chief Justice S H Kapadia, has issued notice to the State Government and asked it to file the reply.

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Cabinet on Friday adopted a new mining policy after a gap of 17 years to promote value addition in mining, generate employment and exploit the mineral wealth of the State prudently with balancing of environmental considerations.

STATE-RUN NMDC has received the nod from the environment ministry for its `274 crore limestone project in Himachal Pradesh provided it fulfills certain conditions, including necessary forest clearances under the Forest Act. Both NMDC and steel major SAIL had inked a pact in 2009 to jointly develop the project to mine three million tonnes of limestone at Arki in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh.
