The Punjab Government has come out with a monitoring plan for preventing illegal mining and illicit excavation of minor minerals in the state.

The government has come up with a draft notification for a new sustainable sand and minor mineral mining policy. It specifies where mining should be allowed or prohibited based on sustainability guidelines and monitoring of resources using scientific tools.

As per section 23C of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Act, 1957, State Governments have been empowered to frame rules for regulating and controlling illegal mining. As such, regulation and control of illegal mining comes under the legislative and administrative jurisdiction of State Governments.
