To decongest Shimla’s traffic, the Himachal Pradesh government has come up with an ambitious monorail project proposal for the hill station.

Himachal’s Urban Development Minister Sudhir Sharma said he, along with Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, met the Union Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath over the issue. “Kamal Nath has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to carry out a survey and prepare a feasibility report in six months,” Sharma said on Sunday.

19 stations in 22.20-km from Technocity to Karamana

A 22.20-km monorail, an elevated rail-based mass rapid transit system (MRTS), has been recommended in the Technocity – Pallippuram – Kazhakuttom – Uloor –Kesavadasapuram – Pattom – Palayam – Thampanoor –Killipalam - Karamana stretch of the capital.

The Monorail, with 19 stations in the first phase, will have provisions to extend to the south up to Neyyattinkara in Phase II and towards north as the Technocity expands, as per the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and presented to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Tuesday.

Haryana is considering introducing a Mono rail between Faridabad and Gurgaon, which will further accelerate the pace of development in the area, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Sunday.

The modalities of the project will be worked out, Mr. Hooda told a rally here while announcing a slew of incentives for Faridabad, including construction of a road from Bata Chowk to B.K. Civil Hospital costing Rs.12 crore and rehabilitation of slum dwellers after a survey in February.

Coimbatore Corporation Council on Thursday resolved to spend Rs 50.67 lakh as its share for the proposed feasibility study on power generation from solid waste and on the implementation of the mono-rail.

The Rs. 50.67 lakh proposed to be spent from the civic body’s general funds is a share while Rs 2.53 crore will be provided by Cities Development Initiative (CDIA) and Asia Development Bank for taking up studies on the projects required for development of the city, 24 x 7 services, training corporation staff towards power generation project from solid waste and for feasibility study of the mono-rail project.

The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will conduct a techno-economic feasibility study of the proposed elevated monorail system in the city.

One of the resolutions the Coimbatore Corporation Council passed at the Monday’s meeting urged the State Government to sanction a mono rail project for the city.

The Mayor proposed the resolution and the Council unanimously accepted it. The Council resolution comes after various associations urged the civic body to take up the issue as the city badly deserved one. More than a fortnight ago, the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore urged the Corporation to take up the proposal, saying that cities with far lesser population, area and financial wherewithal had made considerable progress in getting sanction for a mass transport project and a few even commencing preliminary work.

Monorail will occupy less space, can be completed comparatively early using pre-fabricated structures: RAAC

At a meeting recently, the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC) asked the Coimbatore Corporation to take up with the State Government the need for a monorail for the city. A presentation made on the occasion said that a city such as Coimbatore, with over a million population, could go in for the mass transport system project, more so when cities with far fewer population and lesser area had taken many steps forward.
