Jamshedpur, Aug. 3: Birhors, Sabars, Paharias, Santhalis and Mundaris today matched their steps at a tree plantation programme organised at Bharat Sevashram Sangh run Swami Parnavanand Centenary Girls' Residential School.

With pollution level rising in the state and in the country, the school thought of organising such a programme and invited East Singhbhum superintendent of police Naveen Kumar Singh to be the chief guest on the occasion.

10 Crore Saplings To Be Planted To Check Desertification

Lucknow: Drought-prone Bundelkhand will now get 10 crore saplings from government's kitty. In what could be the biggest plantation target set forth ever for a region, the July 1 GO aims at improving the green cover of seven districts of the region, supposedly driven by a thought that increase in green cover would check desertification and groundwater depletion.

Insufficient rain in the central, southern and western parts of the country could hit kharif crop, a leading economist has said. "Kharif crops received insufficient rain in prominent cropping zones like Assam, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Going forward, the southern states and central India may witness low rain hampering the growth of Kharif crops further,' NCDEX economist Shraddha Umarji said here.

In order to contain the monkey menace in and around the city, the Forest Department is planting saplings of fruit-bearing trees in Basistha area. Sources in the Forest Department said that about a thousand saplings of different fruit-bearing trees had been planted in the area, and plans were afoot to plant more such saplings.

Mohali- The Punjab Tractors Limited (PTL) on Tuesday kick started a tree plantation drive in the city. Deputy Commissioner Rahul Bhandari planted the first of 10,000 saplings to be planted under the "Green Mohali' drive at the campus of the Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre here.

KOLKATA : The Kolkata Municipal Corporation's (KMC) dream to turn the city green seems to have gone sour. For the initial interest shown by the civic body in the project has waned as it is unable to fix a date to flag off this year's plantation drive. Previously, KMC on the occasion of World Environment Day, 5 June, would start their plantation drive under the name of Kolkata Sabujayan (Green Kolkata). "No specific date has yet been fixed for starting the plantation drive. However, some erratic campaigns are being undertaken,' a civic official, said.

Jatropha would be planted at the peripheries of new plantations to be undertaken by Forest Department. Giving this information, Forest Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah informed that in the coming days this move would ensure livelihood to rural people though Forest Committees and bio-diesel would also become available from jatropha oil in remote areas.
