Statement of fact sent to Puducherry government

It appears to be a strange case of a private firm spurring a government body to seek a captive coal mine. In December 2006, the government body — the 38-year-old Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC) – had apparently no idea to seek a coal block until it received an “unsolicited offer” from the private firm — J R Power Generation Private Limited (JRP), which had no prior experience in coal mining or power generation — for a coal mine development project.

Land acquired was not used for intended purpose

The Comptroller and Auditor General report has found several procedural lapses in the acquisition of private land for public purpose and non-utilisation of the land, acquired for the intended purpose, causing additional liabilities to the Puducherry government. The CAG report, which was tabled in the Assembly on Monday, has also pointed out instances of revenue loss , wasteful expenditure and other irregularities in several departments.

Chief Minister N Rangasamy told the Legislative assembly on Tuesday that the Puducherry administration is committed to protecting groundwater, the main source of drinking water and agriculture.

Agriculture minister M Chandrakasu said the administration was taking steps in regulating the construction of tube wells by industries to prevent depletion of water table. Tubewells can be constructed by industries only after obtaining permission from the state groundwater authority as per existing rules. Those constructing tubewells without permission are made to close the borewells with due notice by the State Groundwater authority besides imposing penalty.

The Puducherry Pollution Control Committee (PPCC) will shortly take a decision on clearance for setting up a sewage treatment plant near ‘Kanaganeri' at Kadirgamam. The consultants — Green Chem Solutions Private Limited and Creative Environmental Consultants — appointed by Public Health Division of the Public Works Department have submitted a Rapid Environmental Impact Assessment (REIA) report to the PPCC.

The Government of Puducherry will soon come out with an industrial policy targeted at non-polluting industries, particularly IT and ITeS sectors.

Puducherry residents will soon “sell power”. The ministry of new and renewable energy is planning with the state government to install solar panels on rooftops of houses in Puducherry and excess power generated would be fed to the common grid.

Residents would get paid for excess production in summer and will be able to borrow power during rains for a nominal charge.Speaking at an event hosted by British High Commission and Inter-national Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI),

The cyclone Thane in Tamil Nadu and Puduchery would have caused an economic loss of Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 2,000 crore, but the insurable loss is hardly Rs 100 crore.

Relief operations were under way in south India on Sunday as residents struggled to repair damaged homes and property after a cyclone that claimed 42 lives.
