Ranchi, Aug. 3: While the state is reeling from severe power crisis, the lack of Tenughat Vidyut Nigam Limited (TVNL) chairman is a spanner in generating capacity power at the plant.

Equipped with two units with a total installed capacity of 440 MW, TVNL is being forced to operate only one. Reason: since June 18, there is no one to authorise payments for regular coal purchases or to renew contracts with transporters for carrying coal from the collieries of Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) to the TVNL plant at Lalpania.

Ranchi, Aug. 3: For 16 students of city-based Sapphire International School, flying a space craft at Nasa's space research centre at Albama in the US will become a reality this October.

This is the first time that state students are going to Nasa. The school management is currently preparing the final list of students from Class III to VII, who will be chosen for the trip.

The students, aged nine-14 years, will leave on October 5 with their principal Anupama Singh and a science teacher.

Ranchi, July 24: Even after the mid-day meal scheme was launched five years ago in the state, 2 lakh students are not provided with food at government-run primary schools everyday.

Moreover, the dropout rate among Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes students is still higher compared to that of students from general category, reveals a study conducted by the state human resource development department during the last session.

Ranchi, July 22: Heavy rain lashed the state capital today, inundating several areas and swamping railway tracks.

Movement of several trains was affected, though the situation was not as alarming as it was in Jamshedpur when it experienced record rainfall in a day in June.

The Ranchi-Lohardaga railway tracks at Ranchi Junction were waterlogged.

Sajjan Jindal-owned JSW Steel Limited has employed the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Training (ICFRE) for an environmental impact assessment (EIA).

Representatives of JSW Steel Limited and ICFRE today presented terms of reference for carrying out the assessment with the Union ministry of environment and forests appraisal committee in New Delhi.

Ranchi, July 21: Repeated reminders to the Jharkhand government to safeguard the common man's right to food have fallen on deaf ears in the state, some activists believe.

Public problems and solutions were brought forth today in a symposium held by a group of activists, all working in the development field, especially for the right to food.

Ranchi, July 21: The government today acknowledged that there has been a phenomenal rise in the number of tuberculosis cases in the city and its suburbs.

"Reports filtering in from various government hospitals and healthcare centres indicate that, of late, there has been a rapid increase in the number of tuberculosis patients in Ranchi and in its adjoining rural areas,' Ranchi civil surgeon Geeta Kanth said.
