The study reports the impact of migratory livestock in the buffer area of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The cumulative impacts of livestock grazing, fuel wood extraction and other anthropogenic pressures on forest cover in and around camping sites have been analyzed using satellite data and field observations.

NEW DELHI: The two hydro-electric power projects under construction on the Mandakini river need not be scrapped despite complaints from environmental activists, according to a recommendation made by a team of the Union Ministry of Environment & Forests.

Larsen and Toubro (L & T), which is making a foray into the hydroelectricity sector, has reached an agreement to end a standoff over its 60-Mw Singoli-Bhatwari hydel project in the hilly Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand.

A comparative study was conducted on plant diversity in Panchayat forests and their adjoining reserve forests of three districts, viz, Pauri, Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts of Garhwal Himalaya since April 2003 to December 2004. Total 15 sites were studied.

Uttarakhand forests are smouldering, leading to a loss of forest wealth worth crores, besides invaluable damage to flora and fauna. These raging fires have also claimed two human lives. With mercury soaring high, forest fires have engulfed large areas in the Garhwal as well as the Kumaon regions of the state. State government officials have requested the remote sensing agency to provide satellite imagery of the prevailing fires to know the exact damage.
