Mumbai A week after Shobha the lioness killed a guard at the lion safari gates at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, an internal report has highlighted the need for strengthening security, specifically the nature of the gates.

The park authorities, meanwhile, suggested that the guard might have been overconfident.

Shobha and Ravindra, the two lions brought from Bannerghatta last June, seem to be in good health and have not been showing signs of aggression, said Dr Vinaya Jangale, wildlife vet at the SGNP.

The government will demarcate 25,000 acres of land in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park
in the next three months. This would help prevent further encroachment and identify the dwellers staying on forest or private land, the government said.

Mumbai A small pond in the Yeoor range of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) has got a new of lease of life after the park authorities desilted it and decided to ban immersion of idols in it. The pond was used for immersing Ganesha idols until last year. According to the park authorities, it has decided not to allow any immersion in the pond from this year.
