SINDHUDURG (Maharashtra): Professor Madhav Gadgil, chairman of the ecology expert panel on Western Ghats, heard villagers and officials during his ongoing visit to Konkan. He observed that "prima facie there were deficiencies in some of the environment impact assessment reports'' for the power as well as mining projects in the coastal districts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
A Western Ghats ecology expert panel headed by Madhav Gadgil will be scrutinising proposed nuclear power park at Jaitapur and four thermal power plants in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra from the angle of protection of environment during their 9-day visit from October 4.

Mumbai: Heavy downpour over the last three days has pushed up the water levels in the lakes in Mumbai.
The lake levels saw an increase of 82,622 million litres of water in the last 24 hours starting 8.30 am yesterday to 8.30 am today, civic officials said.
Presently, there is 4,68,633 mld of water in all the city lakes as compared to 6,34,144 mld last year, they said.

With the success and overwhelming response to these underwater activities at Tarkali beach in Sindhudurg, the state tourism department has proposed to take them to big dams in Maharashtra. The department has started studying dams that have the required biodiversity.
Various mining projects have been proposed in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. The proposed mining area seeks to destroy about 200 sq km. in the Western Ghats part of the Sawantwadi and Dodamarg blocks of the district in the core of the northern Western Ghats.

MUMBAI : A month after the formation of an all-party forum to oppose mining and thermal power projects in the coastal Sindhudurg district, industries minister Narayan Rane has described the front as politically motivated, claiming that it has been set up in view of the assembly polls. Sindhudurg happens to be Rane's hometown.
