Traffic movement came to a halt today when residents of Kandra and Gamharia in Seraikela-Kharsawan district blocked the road for over four hours, protesting against the rising pollution level because of sponge-iron units.

The protesters squatted on the road blocking it with their cycles and tractors and refused to budge till their demands were met.

Over 1,500 cowsheds situated around Jogeshwari, Goregaon and Vasai-Virar area will now have to shift to Dapchiri in Dahanu. The Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the state government to file a detailed affidavit within a week stating its plan to shift the tabelas out of the city.

The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) today sealed eight gravel screening cum washing plants it had been unable to close down despite repeated notices since five years.

With the suspended particulate matter (SPM) touching alarming levels even in residential areas, air pollution has once again become a cause of concern for the city.

A survey conducted by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) revealed that this year's SPM levels were far higher than what they were in the past three years.
