Around 15 dead fish were found floating in the Sukhna waters on Monday morning, causing concern about the safety of aquatic life in the lake. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the fish could have died because of deposition of sand in their gills.

The dead fish were removed and their samples sent to the Department of Zoology, Panjab University, for tests. Water samples were also collected by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee.

Consumption of soap in the country will significantly increase during the coming weeks since water has become hard owing to large-scale immersion of idols in the water bodies which will hamper the formation of lather with soap. This problem is endemic in nature as the festivals are being celebrated all over the country and the immersion of idols has already stated with Ganesh Utsav.

Environment minister Sailen Sarkar on Tuesday denied colleague Subhas Chakraborty's allegation that the notification on the withdrawal of 15-year-old commercial vehicles was issued keeping the transport department in the dark.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) chairman, Mr Rajendra K Pachauri, will be visiting the city in the first week of August this year to discuss issues relating to global climate change, chief minister Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said today. Speaking at a function organised by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, he said: "The topic (of climate change) is no more an issue for discussion by scientists only.

The chairman of the state pollution control board (PCB), Mr AN Basu today complained to the chief minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, about state government-run hospitals not following norms required for the discharge and disposal of medical wastes.

Speaking at a programme organised by the PCB to celebrate the World Environment Day, Mr Basu said: "We have set up common medical waste treatment facilities but I have to tell the chief minister that some of the state government hospitals are not adhering to these disposal norms.'
