Government plans to increase the nuclear power generation capacity of the country by three times in ten years, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said today.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has started research projects to check the effects of radiation in northern India.

“In AP, the Nellore and Godavari coast is threatened by these mafias who take away large quantities of vital sea sand by using mechanised devices,” said Prof B.C. Choudhary of the Wildlife Institute of India.

More than 2,00,000 tonnes of precious thorium oxide, which could have met at least half the energy requirements of the country for more than 50 years, is missing from India.

With the technology hurdle no longer in the way, India is readying thorium supplies to fuel its pilot advanced heavy water reactor (AHWR) that is currently in the works.
