In the last three months, one person died and 12 others were diagnosed with the A (H1N1) virus in the State, according to a release from the Department of Health and Family Welfare here on Monday.

The infection was found to have affected people in Chennai, Coimbatore and Tiruppur. The only death reported is that of a 72-year-old farmer who had succumbed to the infection due to old age and delay in seeking treatment.

‘Initiate criminal action against those running such units'

After a brief lull, the menace of illegal dyeing units has resurfaced in the Tirupur-Namakkal belt. The units have come up even after the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board carried out an extensive demolition drive a few months ago.

Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) raided on Monday two illegal dyeing units in Tirupur knitwear cluster.

The units were located at Pitchampalayam Pudur and Thottiamannarai and found discharging effluents into the open despite the Madras High Court directive last year asking dyeing/bleaching units to strictly follow zero liquid discharge in the dyeing process.

TIRUPUR: Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) officials on Wednesday sealed 26 illegal dyeing units functioning in residential areas here.

According to official sources, the TNPCB’s flying squad detected these units in October and November. Since the closure of 734 dyeing units in January 2010 following a court order, such illegal dyeing units started functioning and were taking orders in small quantities.

The district administration has again drawn flak from farmers for its inordinate delay in sealing dyeing units found illegally operating in the district.

Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) sources told The Hindu that 33 erring dyeing units were yet to be sealed even though TNPCB head office had given a directive to the District Collector to do so more than a month ago.
