Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Compliance of Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and other environmental issues (In respect of State of Maharashtra) dated 08/09/2022.

The NGT directed the state of Maharashtra to pay compensation of Rs. 12,000 crores for its failure to effectively address the issue of liquid waste/sewage and legacy waste. The amount of Rs. 12,000 crores has to be deposited within two months and is to be used for restoration measures.

Around 176 legacy waste dump sites have been identified in Rajasthan and around 370 crore is required to do the remediation work. The timeframe for clearing all dumpsites in the state has been pushed from March 2023 to March 2024. Waste to energy plant work order has been awarded for Jaipur and Jodhpur.

Access to effective waste management services is critical in any city. Where a city’s waste management is inadequate, it has drastic effects on the environment, public health and the quality of life of urban residents.

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India published the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022 to ensure environmentally sound management of waste batteries. New rules will replace Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001. The rules cover all types of batteries, viz.

The Comptroller and Auditor General has criticised the railways over its waste management system in almost all sectors from stations, coaching depots, maintenance and production units as well as bio-medical waste generated in its hospitals. The CAG report on Waste Management in Indian Railways was presented in Parliament on 08 August, 2022.

The matter related to steps taken to clear the solid waste/ non-biodegradable plastic waste in Uttarakhand.

The High Court, July 7, 2022 had directed all the district magistrates in the state to submit status reports on the matter. The court noted that not even one status report has been filed by any of the district magistrates.

The committee was constituted by the orders of the National Green Tribunal vide order dated April 22, 2022 in Original Application No. 288/2022 in the matter of news item published in the Times of India, April 22, 2022 titled "Delhi: Another long drawn effort to douse fire at Ghazipur landfill”. Sandeep Sharma, Chief Engineer, East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) was requested by the committee to brief about the dumpsite and the fire incidents at Ghazipur landfill.
