AMC Plans Metered Supply In All Areas

Instead of hinging on a pilot project for metering Jodhpur ward, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is of the opinion that metered water connection should be extended to the entire city at a single go. It will take the project five years to be implemented in the entire city in phases. The hurry being that unless the city plans for a metered supply, the AMC will not be eligible for the second phase of the JNNURM funds.

Residents of areas newly added to BBMP limits are protesting against the BWSSB for collecting penalty along with the beneficiary capital contribution (BCC) from new consumers who had not paid their BCC charges. India needs to focus on treating waste water from the industries to meet the rising demand for fresh water.

Chhattisgarh government has decided to give respite in the water tax to the commercial shops where water consumption has been very less.

The shops trading foodgrains, stationary and garment would be covered under the orbit of respite as the water utilization in such shops had been nominal. They traders were earlier paying water tax at par with the other establishment like hotels, restaurant, auto service centre, tea-coffee shops, milk parlour etc where water consumption was more. According to the tax structure under the civic body act in Chhattisgarh, the shops and business establishment were paying Rs 350 per month in the area coming under Municipal Corporation and Rs 300 in panchayat limits.

Plans to appoint a consultant to prepare a project report

In what could be a far-reaching and ambitious move, Tiruchi Corporation is considering the feasibility of extending round-the-clock drinking water supply in the city. Initially, the move is likely to be implemented on a pilot basis in select areas of the city. As a first step in this direction, the corporation has planned to appoint a consultant to study and prepare a feasibility report on providing 24/7 water supply on international standards, corporation sources told The Hindu . The consultant would also identify the areas where the system could be implemented.

It may still be some more time before the Delhi Jal Board can claim to have streamlined its billing process. The Jal Board has not issued bills for water consumption since May this year after irregularities were reported in the calculations for generating the bills.

On Monday, speaking to The Hindu , a senior DJB official said a fresh batch of bills was despatched at the end of July but complaints of inflated bills and inaccurate consumptions details were again reported by consumers.

New Delhi Water should be appropriately priced for the industry to sustain high growth and to ensure its efficient use, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said today. "There should not be any reluctance in dealing with water pricing when you are dealing with the industry," he told reporters at a Ficci event.

At present, water is highly under-priced for agricultural and industrial use. He further said, "If we want to sustain high growth the for the next 10 or 20 years, then there is simply no doubt that we can not continue to use water as inefficiently as we are doing".

The Delhi Jal Board on Friday framed regulations on metering and tariff to bring about transparency in its functioning and to minimise consumer grievances.

At a meeting of the Jal Board, chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, it was decided to clarify the regulations for installation fee of meters, rent to be paid for use, maintenance and testing of meters and approval was granted to the Delhi Water and Sewer (Tariff and Metering) Regulations, 2012.
