Eluru, Aug. 27: West Godavari collector G. Jayalakshmi called for efforts to realise total sanitation in the district by 2010. The collector held a review meet on sanitation with the officials here on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Jayalakshmi said that individual sanitary latrines were sanctioned to 2.29 lakh families living below poverty line in the district and added that nearly 1.91 lakh ISLs were constructed so far. Out of 2,514 schools, toilets were constructed at 2,481 schools.

Hyderabad, July 23: It will be a double bonanza for farmers and their children. While irrigation projects under the Jalayagnam banner will help the farmers to draw water, the state tourism department's initiative to develop tourism centres at the irrigation project sites will help the wards of the farmers earn a livelihood.

All the irrigation projects would be developed as regional centres of tourist attraction by creating modern entertainment amenities. Of 72 irrigation projects that are under construction in different districts, 34 projects have been identified as tourism centres.

Eluru, July 16: West Godavari collector, Ms G. Jayalakshmi, reviewed the progress of implementation of the third phase of the Indiramma housing scheme in the district here on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, she said that documentation was complete for 73,232 units during the Intinta Indiramma programme in the district and added that at Eluru division alone, documentation was completed for 24,133 units.

Agricultural authorities have taken up measures to ensure proper supply of seeds and fertilisers following a recent directive from the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, in both East and West Godavari districts. In East Godavari, paddy is expected to be raised in about 2.42 lakh hectares for the kharif. With the arrival of an early monsoon and resultant rainfall, farmers have started preparing the ground for taking up cultivation. A section of farmers have already started raising paddy nurseries, and by mid-July, transplantation will be taken up.

State medical and health director general Dr Ramesh Chandra deplored the poor maintenance of sanitation in villages and municipalities and felt the need to sensitise the general public on cleanliness of environs to keep diseases at bay. The director general chaired a regional task force meeting of officials from the medical and health and other connected departments in both East and West Godavari and Krishna districts here on Tuesday. Speaking on the sidelines of the meet, the director general felt the need for creation of awareness on health and hygiene among the public.
