There is a huge potential to make villages self-reliant in energy by choosing a location-specific mix of windmills, micro-hydel and watermills, solar energy, bio-gas etc. report by Bharat Dogra

When T. Boone Pickens, the legendary oilman, began campaigning for wind energy in July, even Congress took notice.

Wind power has long been the big beast of the renewable energy jungle. The technology to generate electricity from wind has been established for more than two decades, and in the past five years has been refined and expanded towards much larger and more powerful turbines including ones that can be used at sea, and towards very small turbines that can be fixed to office buildings or houses.

CHENNAI: Availability of a substantial quantum of wind energy has made a difference to the power supply position, with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) lifting load shedding all over the State on Tuesday afternoon.

Since Sunday, Chennai and suburban areas did not have load shedding. TNEB officials attribute the relaxation of the system to the availability of more power.

On Tuesday evening (around 6-40 p.m.), about 1,500 megawatt of power was produced.

Throughout the day, the wind power generation was in the range of 1,000 MW-1,500 MW.

The British government has approved construction of a 500-megawatt offshore wind farm in Cumbria, northwest England, the government said on Thursday.

It said the Duddon Sands farm, planned near Walney Island off the coast of Barrow-in-Furness, was one of the country's three largest offshore wind farms approved so far. It would comprise up to 139 turbines.
Morecambe Wind Ltd, a consortium of Scottish Power, Eurus Energy from Japan and Denmark's state-controlled DONG Energy, is to build and operate the farm.

The government is set to make a policy on renewable energy to facilitate development of the sector to meet 10 percent of the country's total power demand by 2020.

The policy 'Renewable Energy Policy of Bangladesh' is expected to receive the green light from the council of advisers in two months, a senior official of Power Cell told The Daily Star on Wednesday.

Runaway bush fires and wind in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province have killed 13 people, disaster officials said on Monday, at the same time the Western and Eastern Cape were hit by rain, floods and gale-force winds.

Liz Diedericks, a spokeswoman for KwaZulu Natal's provincial disaster management, said the fires were fanned by hot, dry and windy conditions as the region remained on alert during its fire season.
"Ten people died as a direct result of the runaway veld fires over the weekend," she said.
