Hyderabad, Nov. 17: Hyderabadis will miss the elephants in the Nehru Zoological Park as wildlife officials have decided to shift them out to the elephant camp in Chittoor.

The Central Zoo Authority member secretary, Dr Rajesh Gopal, has issued orders to the state chief wildlife warden, Mr Hitesh Malhotra, to move the elephants out of captivity.

MUMBAI: The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has announced that it will give the 2009 Proggy Award for International Leadership in the Field of Animal Rights to India's Central Zoo Authority (CZA) in recognition of the government organisation's decision to ban the use of elephants in zoos and circuses. "Proggy'' is short for "progressive''.

Ahmedabad: Despite getting four zoobred lions from Hyderabad, Delhi and Bhopal, the Madhya Pradesh (MP) will once again push for getting wild Asiatic lions from Gir sanctuary. Conservator of forest, Gwalior Murli Krishnan said he was in New Delhi on Monday to submit a report raising objections to the allocation of zoo-bred lions in the name of conservation.

Ahmedabad: When Ashok and Rupa delivered a calf some two years ago, there was celebration at the Kamala Nehru Zoological Garden at Kankaria. Never had the zoo seen so many visitors, many of them kids, willing to be photographed with the baby elephant, one of the rare pachyderms born in captivity, though it did not survive.

Mumbai The Central Zoo Authority on Thursday said it has issued notices to zoos and state wildlife departments across India to relocate captive elephants to sanctuaries, camps or animal reserves. However, the state wildlife warden and Mumbai zoo officials have said they are still awaiting the notice.

New Delhi: The city zoo will soon be bidding farewell to its three elephants. In fact, elephants will no longer be seen in any zoo or circus in the country after the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) issued a notice on Monday to the effect that all of these animals in zoos, numbering about 140, should be sent to national parks, sanctuaries and tiger reserves as soon as possible.

The elephants are enjoying oil massages, tigers are getting beef for lunch and the hippos are being fed mahua.

Animals at Birsa Munda Zoological Park, about 22km from the state capital, are getting the royal treatment this year to shield them cope with the cold.

These Rules provide for the application form and set out procedures and requirements for obtaining recognition of a zoo by the Central Zoo Authority.
