The mysterious deaths of 14 deer in Kanpur's Allen Forests Zoo on September 12 was lost in Mayawati's latest statue-and-park drive. Even a missive from Union Minister for Forests and Environment Jairam Ramesh failed to evoke a response from the chief minister's office.

In the wake of the increasing incidents of animal deaths in zoos, campaigners of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) today demonstrated in front of the Central Zoo Authority in the national Capital, and called for shutting down of all zoos in the country.

Sept. 13: Seven officials of the Kanpur zoo have been suspended following the mysterious deaths of 13 spotted and one swamp deer on Saturday.

The deer were found dead in their enclosures on Saturday and there was no visible sign of any injury on their bodies.

The post-mortem carried out by a team of vets also could not ascertain the exact cause of death.

LUCKNOW: Thirteen cheetal and a swamp deer were found dead in mysterious circumstances on Saturday morning. All of them were fed the fodder on Friday evening and deaths reportedly took place on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.

With the functioning and management of a majority of the 196 zoos of the country leaving much to be desired, the Centre is considering setting up a dedicated institution to provide them with scientific and technical assistance, both in order to bring about a turnaround as also to make them visitor-friendly.

SHILLONG: The State Zoo to be constructed over 75 acres of land at Umtrew village in Ri-Bhoi district is likely to be completed by the end of 2011.

Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) VK Nautiyal said the project would cost Rs 19 crore adding that a total amount of Rs 12 crore had already been sanctioned.
