Kolkata: Eight Brazilian marmoset monkeys were stolen from the Alipore Zoological Gardens after the netting of the enclosure in which they were kept was prised open on Saturday night, zoo authorities said here on Sunday.
Due to the threats and the declining population trends the species has been listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972) of India and is listed as endangered inthe 2008 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The present studbook of snow leopard has been compiled for the India region and the data used is current till June 30th 2009. The data has been provided by four zoos.

Four blackbucks have died in Marghazar Zoo during the last one week due to insufficient arrangements amidst scorching heat, the zoo officials said. They said during the last four years, 65 animals and 87 birds had died in the zoo. They said the zoo management had taken no practical steps to control the deaths of animals and birds despite the initiation of many inquiries into such incidents.
