Buildings are experimenting with alternative energy with small wind turbines on rooftops

In the last few weeks, the city has had a respite from its daily burden of two-hour power cuts — wind energy has helped reduce load shedding to one hour a day. Thanks to the huge wind turbines that dot the State's southern coast, much-needed power is supplied to grids. Of late, some buildings in the city have begun to take their own measures to go green. Small wind turbines have cropped up on several rooftops.

Plans are afoot to increase the production of inland fish in the State to three lakh tonnes a year.

Presently, of the total 5.97 lakh tonnes of fish production in Tamil Nadu, inland fish production is only 1.72 lakh tonnes and marine fisheries is 4.25 lakh tonnes. To make available more fish seeds and advanced fingerlings from 7 cm to 10 cm stage, the capacity of fish hatcheries and fish-rearing centres across the State is being enhanced and additional infrastructure created. Catla, Rohu, Mrigal varieties of Indian major carp (kendai meen) and common carp are bred and reared at these centres.

Work to construct rainwater harvesting structures in stormwater drain network to begin next month

Work on construction of rainwater harvesting structures in stormwater drains by the Chennai Corporation is expected to begin in May when the water table is the lowest in the city. The civic body had announced that over 5,000 rainwater harvesting structures would come up across the city.

CHENNAI: The State government will impose a ban on the use of plastic carry bags made of virgin plastics or recycled plastics of less than 60 micron thickness and 8x12 inches size.

In his address in the Assembly on Friday, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said the government would lay special emphasis on protecting the environment.
