Emerging technologies affect the social, economic and environmental dimensions of our world, often in ways that are entirely unanticipated. A study was carried out to assess the concentration of the critical pollutants, such as sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and suspended particulate matter present in the ambient air of a fertilizer industry during the year 2000.

Subsidence can occur at any time over old mine workings, regardless how long it has been deserted due to the existence of voids and weak supporting pillars. Subsidence in old workings leads to severe damage to surface structures.

Outstanding advances have been made in the technologies of using cemented fill throughout the world. The choice of a cemented fill system, its mix composition and their proportion depends on the stope geometry, strength requirement, strata condition, working condition and the economy of the mining method as a whole.

Indoor radon exposure is estimated to be one of the leading causes of lung cancer. Radon can enter the home through cracks in the foundation floor and walls, drains and other openings. Indoor radon concentration depends on the material from which buildings have been constructed. This study is aimed at collecting scattered information about the radon measurements by various workers in India.

Pulp and paper mill requires a huge quantity of water and accordingly a substantial amount of spent liquor is generated. In this study purification of lignosulphonates (LS) present in spent sulphite liquor, a pulp and paper mill effluent was studied using continuous diafiltration.

The performance of various aeration systems for treatment of two different industrial liquid effluents was performed and discussed in this work. Fixed, combined and diffused systems were chosen. The samples for different detention time were tested for BOD and COD, before and after aeration for these three systems.

The ability of weathered coal to remove Cr(VI), Hg(VI), Hg(II), Cu(II) and Fe(II) from aqueous solution by adsorption was studied. In this work, adsorption of heavy metals on weathered coal has been studied by using batch techniques.

Removal of chromium (III) from aqueous solution by microbial waste biomass (MB1) obtained as a byproduct of pharmaceutical fermentation industry was studied. In order to understand the sorption kinetic behaviour of chromium (III), a series of batch mode experiments were conducted at different pH values, adsorbent dosage and initial chromium concentration.

Environmental pollution has become a cause for great concern as it continues to increase rapidly day by day. The heavy metals, such as copper, lead, chromium and nickel are more toxic to the living organisms. In the present investigation, an attempt is made to remove the heavy metals using activated carbon of rice husk.

Having an ISO-14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) will help enhance a firm's economic performance and at the same time improves its environmental performance. The benefits of ISO-14001 lie in cost savings through energy consumption, raw material input, waste management, environmental impact reversal as well as an improved public image.
